{interview + a giveaway} kena from pistachio...

Whenever I head to my local bookstore, I always make sure I take a look throughout the stationery section. I love checking out the new cards and journals, and all the other pretty paper items... especially the section of Pistachio products!

Pistachio is an eco-friendly paper, gift, and apothecary store with two locations in Toronto and at select Chapters in Canada and Barnes & Noble's throughout the U.S.A. They embrace the idea that being environmentally caring doesn't mean denying yourself of certain products, but rather developing and using products in a more eco-friendly way – that sure sounds good to me. Their stationery line is gorgeous and the apothecary products they carry always have the most gorgeous packaging – take Lucia soaps for example.

So when I met Kena of the blog In Life & In Fashion I just had to set up an interview, as she's the head buyer for Pistachio products! How cool of a job is that? I had to know more! Plus, she's super sweet and I love the optimistic tone that reads from her blog... be sure to drop by. For now, check out my interview with Kena below...

What's a typical day like being the head buyer for Pistachio?
On a typical day I source cool eco products, meet with new vendors and spend time with customers in our stores. I also attend gift shows, plan assortments and visual merchandising plans.

Which part of your job do you love the most?
I love meeting small vendors who pour their heart and souls into developing new exciting products. I also love planning out new concepts for the store. But my most favourite thing is finding a fantastic new product for the store!

How did you get to where you are now?
I have always wanted to work in fashion so for my MBA internship I pretty aggressively pursued a marketing spot at Old Navy in San Francisco. While I was there I learned about the merchant or buyer role and KNEW that I was meant to do it! I conducted informational interviews with merchants at every level and across the entire Gap Inc organization (Old Navy, Banana Republic and Gap) and made it clear to anyone who would listen that I needed to do that job. I was eventually offered a merchant role which I started after graduation. I spent a year at Old Navy, then at Banana Republic when we moved back to Canada and I joined the team at Joe Fresh. Just this past May I made the transition to Pistachio. I do miss working in fashion, but what really drives me is working in a creative environment which is definitely the case at Pistachio!

Do you have any special "green tips" of your own?
I think the biggest tip is really to be mindful about how you live your life – what you buy, what you consume, how you live in your home, how you travel to work – being more mindful about the choices you make will automatically result in better choices for both you and the planet.

And in the spirit of Dress, Design & Decor...

What's your favourite item of clothing?
Right now it would have to be my beautiful Rudsak coat. It is black wool with a huge leather collar and I feel great in it always.

Are there any designers that inspire you?
Coming from an Indian background, I love designers that embrace colour like Missoni, Anna Sui and Dolce and Gabbana. Having said that, I also love the laid-back, so easy to wear designs of Burberry and Ralph Lauren.

What do you love best about your home?
I love that there are windows in every room that bring in a different but equally beautiful light throughout the entire day.

Thank you so much to Kena for answering all my questions... and for a little fun, i'm giving away a wee, little set of Pistachio gift cards. They're perfect for a little love note or Valentine's Day message and come with envelopes to match! To enter, leave a comment below, by this Sunday, January 24 at 11:59pm and a winner will be chosen for Monday. Good luck!

Please leave a valid email address if it is not already linked in your profile.

Ooh, Pistachio, lovely. I have a collection of cards in my study that is constantly being plucked as I send random notes to friends around the world. This would look great in that collection!
